Tomatoes – Tumbling Tom

on

First time growing these tomatoes. I germinated on a windowsill to get them going then transferred to polythene hanging baskets once they reached 4 inches in height. This was a mistake. The vertical edges of the polythene rub against the stems of the tomato plants when its windy. Some of the young plants have been lost to this “sawing”.

However, those plants that survived are thriving which is surprising for British weather, though next summer I will use normal hanging baskets.

Notes

  • Grown on a window sill they will germinate within a few days to a week.
  • They grow quickly
  • Don’t water every day but plenty of water every few days
  • Transplant outside to hanging baskets once they reach 3 – 4 inches in height
  • They will take a couple of weeks to establish once moved
  • In warm or hot weather water every day. Do not let the soil dry out (shrink).
