Tomatoes are easy to grow though they do need a lot of direct sunlight, warmth during the day and cool at night to fruit. I’ve grown tomatoes before in a greenhouse, but this time I’m growing them in the house.
I’ve germinated on the windowsill, then transplanted to a grow bag (in a grow bag tray), then moved in to sit in front of the patio windows. There they get around 8 hours of direct sunlight every day. They grow tall quickly so I’ve had to keep cutting them back. Frustratingly they grow tall, then flower.
To water I’ve cut the bottom off an empty juice bottle, upended it and embedded it in the grow bag.
Notes
- Grown on a window sill it will germinate within a few days to a week.
- The plants grow quickly
- Don’t water every day but plenty of water every few days. Once established and flowering water every day in warm or hot weather. Under watering can prevent fruiting after flowering. Open vents during hot weather
- Leaves hate water
- Once new growth starts in the join of existing leaf branches, cut the leaf branch to ensure energy goes into producing flowers, and then fruit rather than leaves.
- Don’t let them grow too tall otherwise all the energy will go into growing the plant rather than flowering (easier said than done)
- Under watering will cause flowers not to fruit. Don’t fret. Increasing the amount and frequency will rectify that problem
- Old flowers that didn’t fruit may activate at a later date. Don’t get rid of them.
